Ayodhya, also known as Oudh, is a town in Uttar Pradesh state, northern India, with a population of 49,417 as of 2001. It is situated on the banks of the Ghaghara River, just east of Faizabad, and is now considered a suburb of Faizabad. In ancient times, Ayodhya was one of India’s most prominent cities and served as the capital of Kosala, as depicted in the epic Ramayana. Today, it is revered as one of the seven holy cities of Hinduis.
